Difference between IPTV and OTT

With the internet boom, the world has changed significantly in many ways. The television set was a major source of entertainment for a long period in history but with easy access to the internet and a high-speed broadband connection, OTT and Smart IPTV subscription have become the major source of entertainment in today's age.

Both OTT and IPTV services use the internet to function and both provide endless content to their viewers. Unlike TV, you can watch your favourite shows on both the OTT platform and IPTV from anywhere and anytime you want. Due to some similar features people often become confused to distinguish between them. But the reality is they are quite different from each other both in terms of used technology and user experience. In this blog, we are going to discuss IPTV and OTT and the measurable difference between them.

What is IPTV?

Internet Protocol Television delivers the same content our Cable TV and Satellite TV provides but it has even more options to explore.

You can record your favourite shows, watch Live shows and use video on demand feature to stream anything you want at any time. Cable TV has a wired connection and Satellite TV captures signal through the rooftop antenna but smart IPTV needs an internet connection to work. It uses Internet Protocol technology to provide high-quality audio and video experience. Anyone with a high-speed broadband connection can enjoy IPTV services from Television, Mobile Phone, Laptop, or Tablet.

What is OTT?

OTT stands for Over-The-top; it refers to the content provided via an internet connection rather than a cable or satellite connection. OTT platforms can be used from a mobile, tablet, or laptop. These days TVs with preinstalled OTT apps are also available so you can watch your favourite web series on a TV screen as well. Difference between OTT and IPTV

Network- open vs closed

The biggest difference between the smart IPTV and OTT platforms are OTT provided through an open network whereas IPTV is delivered through a closed network.

Price

There are many OTT platforms available these days, providing video streaming services and due to high competition, the subscription amount has reduced to a great extent. Among all the OTT platforms NETFLIX is wildly used by viewers from all around the world.  Other service providers like Amazon Prime Video and Hulu also providing good quality content at a very reasonable price.

Unlike OTT platforms, IPTV subscription is expensive due to its personalized services. There are fewer companies provide IPTV services as compared to OTT and the number of users is also minimal.

Set-Up-Box

OTT platform doesn't require any Set-up-box to access its content. You can use it simply through its application but IPTV requires Set-up-box as our Televisions don't have the technology to broadcast the content which uses internet protocol medium.

Internet speed

You can watch videos on OTT platforms in a wider range of qualities depending upon your network strength and package. But in the case of IPTV, a high-speed broadband connection is necessary to stream the content. The internet speed must be at least 10 Mb/s to start streaming. If your connection is week then the videos will buffer. This is one of the main reasons for its less popularity.

Content

The content over OTT platforms is limited to web series, live streaming, and some movies but through best IPTV Subscription, you will have access to thousands of TV channels from all around the world. You can use Video on demand (VOD), watch Live shows, and stream on-demand content.

Conclusion

Both OTT and IPTV are becoming popular all around the world. Where OTT platforms are wildly used to stream content, IPTV is still in its development phase.
